What Does it Mean To Be Called By God?

God called Noah to build an Ark, called Moses lead Israel out of Egypt, called Jonah to preach in Nineveh. The Old Testament stories of Jacob, Samuel, David, Solomon reveal to us that God was at work in ordinary people to do great things.

What about us? What does it mean to be called by God?Are we really called to do things like that?

I have been reading Ruth Haley Barton’s book, Strengthening The Soul Of Your Leadership. This is a great read, and I highly recommend it. In her book, Barton unpacks the story of Moses, and helps us see how God developed Moses’ leadership while he was in Midian. As I was reading about God’s call to Moses, I was reminded about two important things in terms of our own calling:

Calling is about who we are: In our calling, we don’t just find God giving us a task, but in essence we discover that we are one of His children. We are not just God’s tools, voice, hands and feet, we are more than that. To be called a child of God means we have God’s love, attention, care, and as one of his children, it causes us to respond to Him relationally. To be called means we know our identity as a child of God, and we interact with Him in all the areas of our life (Psalm 139).

Calling is not just something that happens to us, it is something that happens in us. We often look at God’s calling as a event, moment, or experience. While those things do happen, our calling is more often found within us; in our passions, personality, heart, life-experiences, the way we are wired as individuals. God has created each person for a specific purpose. When those things are realized in us as part of God’s design for us, God is revealing his calling to us from from within.

In order to understand our calling, we first have to see that our calling has been weaved into the mold of our very being. As we listen and reflect on our life and being, our calling rises to the surface, and we embrace what God has designed us to be and do.

Do you sense God calling you? How and what does that look like? Use the comment section below. I would be interested to hear your thoughts.

The Lord is calling me to go through the process of maturing in Christ and write about it. He wants me to write a book that will bring many people to salvation.
